Wal-Mart holds green gaming summit

Game packaging was on the agenda at a "green packaging summit" hosted by Wal-Mart's retail warehouse chain Sam's Club in the US last week.

Representatives from Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony, Electronic Arts, Activision and American Game Factory met in Bentonville in Arkansas to talk about game packaging, power consumption and education.

Delegates discussed the possibility of changing the packaging of games from plastic to cardboard, which it said would equate to taking 4,000 cars off the road.

Last year 101 million games were sold in plastic cases.

A spokesperson writing on Wal-Mart's blog Check Out said: "The goals of sustainability and the gaming experience are not mutually exclusive."
