PET manufacturer Octal is preparing to expand its Oman-based operation in response to increasing demand from large volume packaging producers.

The company has commenced production at its second PET plant in Salalah, Oman, which currently has a capacity of 300,000 metric tonnes per annum.

A second phase of expansion will increase capacity by a further 500,000 metric tonnes by early 2011.

Octal has targeted the food and consumer markets in the US, Europe and China as its main objective in 2009.

Demand for clear food and consumer goods packaging and the expansion of supermarket chains in developing countries has driven annual growth to 7-10%.

“Our patented DPET technology uses a single-phase reactor to integrate PET resin and sheet manufacture,” said Nicholas Barakat, Octal managing director.

“The technology bypasses the expensive PET drying and melting process of conventional clear rigid sheet manufacture, producing PET sheet with superior optical and mechanical properties and using 65% less energy,” he added.

Octal employs 250 staff in Salalah and plans to hire 100 people this year.
