Packaging gets on Soap Box over brands from yesteryear

R Whites lemonade, Cadbury’s Caramel, the Marathon bar – these are just a few of the nostalgic brands and campaigns Packaging News readers would like to see brought back from the depths of time.

This week, Soap Box was buzzing with responses to our question: which brands or packaging designs would you like to see revived or updated?

Dawn Roderick listed a host of “1980s classics”, including Campari and Cinzano and R Whites Lemonade with its “legendary stripy bottle”.

Alphabites, in particular, were top of her list: “I want my children to be able to spell their names with potato shapes”.

Mohammed Chopdat got misty-eyed over Caramac bars, while Design Diva stated her outrage at Opal Fruits’ rebranding as Starburst.

Adverts, it seems, also play an important role in the brand nostalgia, with Thomas Chimes reminding regular contributor Phil Marlowe of an old favourite.

He said: “How about the ‘My mum says, if I don’t drink my milk, when I grow up, I’ll only be good enough to play for Accrington Stanley… Accrington Stanley? Who are they?’”

As Chimes continued, “still a classic”.
