Packaging industry could join Proskills

The packaging industry is being consulted on an overhaul of training strategy that could result in its inclusion in the Proskills sector skills council.

In the initial stage of the consultation, Proskills, which already covers the printing, glass, and paints and coatings industries, has drawn up a brief questionnaire to gauge packaging’s willingness to become involved.

IOP: The Packaging Society has sent this to packaging trade associations, with responses due by 20 July.

Proskills chief executive Terry Watts also wants to hold meetings with employers in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to explain the plans.

The packaging industry was part of the Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies sector skills council, but the relationship ended in 2006 as it was felt it was not benefiting either party.

If the industry approves the Proskills proposals, the organisation would set up a packaging industry group that could include 20 employers, one or two trade union representatives, one or two trade associations, and one or two training providers.
