Rapak Europe plans small number of redundanciesJosh Brooks, 14 April 2009Be the first to comment on this article DS Smith’s Rapak Europe bag-in-box business has proposed a small number of redundancies as it aims to reduce costs. The company has begun consultation with employees at the Rugby plant over making up to six redundancies out of a total of 120 employees. It said that a number of cost-cutting measures had already been taken but that “more are required if the business is to remain competitive”. It is possible that some of the redundancies will be compulsory. The cutbacks are part of a wide-ranging review of costs launched in December across DS Smith’s businesses which aims to counter the current tough trading conditions. Keith Eagle, general manager of DS Smith Plastics Liquid Packaging and Dispensing Europe, said; “We regret having to make this proposal but it is necessary for the future success of the business. “We aim to do everything we can to support the employees who are affected and to assist them in seeking alternative employment.” Other recent cutbacks at DS Smith have included the decision to shut down the oldest of four paper machines at Kemsley Mill in Kent, which is part of the St Regis paper division, with the loss of up to 40 jobs.
