The fate of a Remploy packaging and print operation in Manchester has yet to be decided as union representatives slammed the ongoing consultation process.

The plant is one of 43 earmarked for closure under a restructure of the firm, which provides employment for people with disabilities. The government wants to place more people with disabilities into mainstream employment.

Remploy head of communications Shiona Williams said the firm planned to consult with trade unions until late August before putting a final proposal to government.

However, Unite national officer Kevin Hepworth said: "We do not believe the company is consulting with us properly at the moment. We are having great difficulty getting facts and figures from them."

Williams said Remploy would ensure no disabled person is made redundant as a result of the plans.
