Remploy’s Manchester packaging site set for shutdown

A Remploy packaging and print operation in Manchester is among 43 factories to be closed as part of the company’s cost-cutting drive.

Remploy, which employs some 5,000 disabled staff in various manufacturing sectors across the UK, said part of the reason for the closures was a desire to see more disabled people in mainstream employment.

Unions are now seeking authority for a ballot on strike action at all 83 Remploy plants. Remploy’s six other packaging and print plants are not, however, currently under threat of closure.

Unite national officer Rachael Maskell said the union “does not accept the business case Remploy management have put forward”.

Remploy receives £111m in government subsidies each year.
