Chief executives from leading international paper and packaging companies have come together to discuss the industry at a dedicated Reuters’ summit in Helsinki.

Guest speakers at the event include M-real chief executive Mikko Helander, Mondi chief executive David Hathorn and Huhtamaki chief financial officer Timo Salonen, amongst others.

Topics under discussion include biomass, green energy and overcapacity and the wider consequences of the recession.

Speaking at the event, David Patterson, chief executive of Canadian paper and pulp manufacturer AbitiBowater told Reuters that the paper and packaging industry needs to consider growth opportunities.

He said: “We all need to look for areas that have some growth and create some competitive advantage through your investment.”

In a separate talk, Huhtamaki’s chief executive Jukka Moisio warned against combining paper and packaging manufacture in one business can be difficult.

“From a logical point of view and how you operate, the paper industry is global, so you make paper reels…and that can travel to Asia and back,” he told Reuters.

“When you make packaging, you have to actually respect that the packagings cannot travel very long. So you actually have an opposite way of looking at the world.”

Reuters’ Paper and Packaging Summit runs from 24-25 August in Helsinki.
