Approximately 100 jobs are under threat at a US Rexam plastics operation after it was announced the site would close in the fourth quarter of 2010.

The site in Nashua, New Hampshire manufactures injection blow-moulded products for the healthcare market. This production will be absorbed by other Rexam facilities following the closure.

Rexam said it would help employees affected by the closure to find jobs and that it would retrain staff where required.

Rexam’s newly announced chief executive Graham Chipchase said the closure was part of the company’s plan to align manufacturing capabilities across its global plastics businesses.

“It will allow us to improve the overall utilisation of our existing operations, further balanace capacity and demand and continue our focus on delivering world-class products and services to customers,” he said.

The news follows the sale of Rexam’s personal care facility in Wisconsin in the US in a management buy-out.

Keith Everson led the buy-out of the company, which is to be known as Sussex IM, and will continue to run the operation.

Rexam will also continue to use the site to source manufacturing and assembly of current make-up products.

Rexam employs more than 15,000 people across its 45 plastics businesses globally. These serve the healthcare, closures and personal care markets.

It has no plastics operations in the UK.
