SAICA Packaging is to make 18 jobs redundant at its box plant in Edinburgh.

A total of 18 redundancies are to be made on the shop floor as a result of a downturn in sales, which the company said was “directly attributable to the current economic climate”.

SAICA management said in a statement today that it was “hopeful” that the redundancies would be voluntary.

It added it was keen to reiterate the site’s importance to all 140 employees.

News of the redundancies was formally communicated to employees last Friday (15 May).

The news follows months of speculation about the security of the Edinburgh site.

In February, Saica told Packaging News that it expected to reinstate a night shift at the site by the end of the second quarter.

It is as yet unclear whether this is still the case.

SAICA (Sociedad Anónima Industrias Celulosa Aragonesa) bought SCA’s UK corrugated business for £100m last year.

SAICA Packaging UK employs more than 2,000 people at 19 sites across the UK, and has a turnover of EUR 430m.
