Sainsbury’s has reported improved sales growth for the second quarter and expects to be “well positioned” as it enters the Christmas trading period.

The retailer reported that sales for the second quarter increased by 5% excluding fuel for the 16 weeks to 4 October 2008.

Chief executive Justin King said that the company has continued to expand its own label “basics range”, which has grown to 550 products and “refocused” on promotional offers.

King said: “The economic environment remains particularly challenging and we expect this to continue throughout the second half and we have developed the Sainsbury’s offer to perform in these conditions.”

Sainsbury’s has already disposed of 48 stores in this financial year and a further nine disposals are planned for the second half.
