The paper and packaging company is investing in a new lime kiln and winder in Sweden as well as a new production line for incontinence care products in Russia.
The SEK500m investment in a lime kiln at the Östrand pulp mill in Timrå will increase pulp production by 10,000 tonnes a year, or 2% of its capacity, and replaces two existing oil-fired kilns.
The new kiln will use fuel pellets from SCA’s BioNorr plant and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 80%, the firm said.
Östrand site manager Ingela Ekebro said: “The new lime kiln will enable us to increase our production and achieve a dramatic drop in greenhouse gas emissions.”
SCA has also earmarked SEK255m to replace a winder for its White Top Kraftliner production at the Munksund facility. The grade was showing “strong growth” in the market, SCA said, and the new winder will “somewhat increase capacity”.
A further SEK138m will be invested in a new production line for incontinence care products in Russia to meet expected market growth.
The new line will be installed at the Veniov plant, some 180km south of Moscow, and will mean the firm can reduce its reliance on imports from Holland and Poland.
