Sealed Air is expanding its rigid medical packaging business into the US by acquiring Alga Plastics of Rhode Island.

The food and protective packaging supplier will integrate Alga with its existing Nelipak brand and flexible film business, which is strong in Europe.

Alga Plastics makes rigid packaging for medical, consumer and industrial applications. The firm has 100 staff, who will remain at its plant at Cranston, Rhode Island.

Nelipak, bought by Sealed Air in January 2006, had sales of £25m (US$50m) in 2004. Its headquarters are in the Netherlands and it has a production facility in Ireland.

Sealed Air has been in the medical business for more than 20 years through its Cryovac flexible films.

Alga chief executive Joan Parkos Moran said: "Joining Sealed Air means we now cover the two biggest medical device regions in the world."

Sealed Air chief executive William Hickey said the acquisition would strengthen the firm's relationship with its US customers and allow it to offer a "wider array of technologies, products and services".
