Sharp Interpack has bought the order book and some assets of Rexam’s Deeside thermoforming business.

The Bristol-based plastics specialist plans to incorporate work from the business, which was closed as part of Rexam’s restructuring of its plastics business, into its Yate facility.

It is understood that the company began consultation with staff of the closure of the Deeside factory, which employed around 70 staff, in May.

Financial details of the deal with Sharpak have not been made public and it is unclear exactly which assets Sharp Interpack has bought.

Deputy managing director Andrew Copson told Packaging News that the “prime interest” was the order book. He did not comment on whether any staff or equipment would move from the Deeside plant to Yate.

He said that the deal would confirm Sharp Interpack as the “pre-eminent deployer” of rotary thermoforming technology in the UK market”.

Copson added that the acquisition would give the company exposure to new market segments.

He also said that it was a “logical step” as it followed the 2006 deal when Sharp Interpack bought the Yate site near Bristol from Rexam.

A spokesman for Rexam confirmed the sale but declined to comment further.

Yesterday, Rexam announced a £351m rights issue in half-year results that showed a 15% drip in profits and spoke of a restructuring that has included closing plastic packaging operations.
