Plastics group Sharp Interpack is in negotiations to be sold to the French packaging multinational Groupe Guillin, Packaging News can reveal.

Exclusive negotiations over the takeover of the £84m-turnover group began on 21 December and due diligence is underway.

A statement from Groupe Guillin to the French stock exchange said that it expects to complete the transaction in the first quarter of the year.

Sharp Interpack deputy managing director Andrew Copson today told Packaging News: “Assuming that the due diligence is successful and that the transaction goes ahead, it’s a great move for the company.”

In the UK, Groupe Guillin, which was founded in 1972, already owns Premier Packaging in Canterbury, Kent, GPI UK in Epping, Essex and Socamel UK in Chippenham, Wiltshire.

Groupe Guillin said in its statement that the acquisition would allow the group to “reinforce its position in the UK market with a complete offer of packaging for meat products, fruit and vegetables and the food industry”.

The company also has businesses in European countries including Poland, Italy, Spain and Portugal.
