SIM cards sold from vending machines in bespoke cans made by Rexam are the latest craze on the streets of Ukraine.

Beverage can manufacturer Rexam manufactured the 500ml cans that are sold through 20 vending machines outlets alongside food and drink items.

The cans have a special plastic closure to keep the SIM card secure.

Rexam’s colour management systems were paramount in securing the contract with Ukranian radio-systems company TM Beeline.

“You can now buy SIM-cards packed in beverage cans on the street in the city centre, meaning you no longer need to visit a mobile shop or a mobile operator’s office,” said Beeline director of marketing Anton Volodkin.

“The Boom-Banka Can was specially made for a younger audience and for those who value convenience and availability,” he added.

Word-of-mouth and blogs have been central to the successful launch of this product as the initial marketing spend was minimal.

Initially the cans were to be sold through TM Beeline dealers, but the idea to distribute them through vending machines was chosen to target the youth market.
