Absorbent food packaging specialist Sirane has said that it is looking for acquisitions and will launch a new range of compostable films as it gave a bullish outlook for 2010.

The £8m-turnover group, based in Telford, said that it would launch a new range of barrier and permeable films for meat and produce packaging that are fully compostable.

Director Simon Balderson, who founded Sirane in 2003, said: “We have great expectations of next year, and expect to be able to make further acquisitions and enhancements to the business.”

Sirane has spent much of the last year integrating Thomas & Green, the Hereford-based firm it bought in August 2008 that gave it a foothold in the healthcare market.

It also revealed that more than 35% of its current sales were for products that it did not manufacture a year ago. New products in the last 12 months have included the Dri-Fresh Resolve range of compostable plastic products.

Meanwhile, the company has completed the planned expansion of its Telford facility to 6,500sqm from a previous floorspace of just over 4,000sqm.

Balderson gave a positive outlook for the packaging industry generally despite the continued recession. “The credit crunch has played a part in the packaging industry for the past 12 months,” he said. “[But] international food continues to innovate and continues to need better packaging.

“The buoyancy in these marketplaces will be hard to put down in the coming months. Whatever the state of the mortgage, consumers appear to currently continue to invest in their food and drink.”
