Leominster residents living near Skymark Packaging have been reassured that there has been no long-term health risk from the fire that burnt down the factory in the early hours yesterday.

Dr Akeem Ali, the director of public health for NHS Herefordshire, assured residents that the air quality in the town was safe at a press conference yesterday.

Dr Ali said that he was satisfied that any risk had been minimised and that it was safe for evacuees to return to their homes.

He also said that risk of explosions at the Skymark factory had been the reason for the evacuation of around 170 Leominster residents from the nearby area.

Crews from the Hereford and Worcester Fire Service were called out at 3.25am yesterday morning after a fire tore through Skymark’s factory.

Four schools had to be closed and local people evacuated due to fear of wind-blown chemicals, as the factory holds chemicals and butane gas cylinders on site.

According to H&W Fire Service, fire fighters extinguished the fire yesterday afternoon, but they are due to remain on site today.

In an interview with BBC News website production director Paul Neath said that he hoped the factory could be rebuilt in Southern Avenue or nearby.

Neath was unavailable to comment as this story was published.
