British Soft Drinks Association (BSDA) members are taking strides towards the sustainability targets laid out by the association, according to a progress report published this week.

BSDA president and chief executive of Britvic Paul Moody congratulated the industry on its achievements at the BSDA’s annual industry lunch, held in London yesterday.

The BSDA laid out its sustainability targets on climate change, waste and packaging, water and transport in June 2008. Its members agreed to send no manufacturing to landfill by 2015 and to work with the Waste and Resources Action Programme (Wrap) in improving the sustainability of soft drinks packaging.

A report published this week outlines the progress made by BSDA members, including Coca-Cola, Danone Waters and Innocent, in meeting these targets.

Examples given in the report include the work done by AG Barr with its suppliers to reduce the weight of PET used in its bottle packaging to remove 139 tonnes of plastic.

So far, a total of six BSDA members have signed up to Wrap’s Courtauld Commitment to reduce packaging and waste ending up in landfill. Greencore and Innocent Drinks are the latest drinks companies to sign up.

“Design and innovation are at the heart of what we do,” said Moody. “This relentless focus on innovation over the recent history of the industry has been instrumental in modernising the category and providing substantial choice for our customers.”

Moody also welcomed AG Barr chief executive Roger White as the new BSDA vice president.
