Sony calls for ‘death to the clamshell’Jill Park, 22 December 2008Be the first to comment on this article Electronics giant Sony has declared war on the clamshell pack and is investigating alternatives to the notoriously difficult to open plastic pack. The Sony Electronics Blog revealed that the company expects to announce an alternative to the clamshell pack, which is used to pack consumer electronics like headphones and portable music players, soon. Retailers often favour the packs because the products are clearly displayed, while also being protected from theft, but consumers struggle to open them without scissors. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission claims that plastic packaging has caused more than 25,000 injuries since 2004, according to US media reports. Sony has released an internal video, part of a longer presentation that was shown at the company’s last Sony Electronics business conference. Last month (November 4) Amazon revealed that it has partnered with brand on its Frustration-Free Packaging initiative, which aims to eliminate difficult-to-open and over-packaged products. The company has worked with Fisher Price, Mattel, Microsoft and electronics manufacturer Transcend to pack 19 of their bestselling products in easier-to-open and streamlined packaging.
