The retailer will start its campaign next week by installing an automated recycling unit outside its Cheshunt Metro store, before installing a further nine units outside stores across Essex, Herts and Hampshire.
Consumers will be able to recycle PET plastic drinks bottles, aluminium and steel cans, the most common waste on the high street, in the recycling units.
The £25,000 automated units can identify different materials and then segregate and compact them ready for recycling.
Tesco has previously only had automated units at its out-of-town sites.
“We know through the success of our larger recycling units that a growing number of people are doing all they can to help the environment by recycling valuable waste materials and disposing of their rubbish thoughtfully,” said Tesco head of recycling and waste Sion Stanfield.
“However we know we can reach more people by making facilities more accessible to pedestrians when they’re ‘on-the-go’, with these smaller units, so we are optimistic that they will lead to increased levels of recycling and cleaner streets.”
Tesco has taken advice from Recoup on the scheme, which will be officially launched by Minister for Farming and the Environment Jane Kennedy and the Mayor of Broxbourne, Councillor Carol Crump-Eynon, on 7 May.
If the scheme proves successful then it will be rolled out to UK high streets over the next few years.
News of the scheme comes a month after Tesco launched a trial in two stores whereby customers can leave packaging at the till.
