Tetra Pak has opened a new packaging material plant in northern China that is powered using only sustainable resources.

The Hohhot plant in Inner Mongolia uses approximately 20 million kWh of power, generated primarily from wind, annually.

Tetra Pak invested EUR 60m in building the site, which joins the company’s existing three manufacturing sites in China.

“This new plant is another example of our focus on resource-efficient production and our commitment to protecting the environment,” said Dennis Jönsson, president and chief executive of the Tetra Pak Group.

“By putting leading environmental programmes into every part of our business, we believe we will continue to deliver competitive advantages to our customers,” he added.

Tetra Pak has invested a total of EUR 250m in China and produces approximately 50 billion packs in the country each year.

The company has committed to reduce its CO2 emissions by 10% between 2005 and 2010 in absolute terms, while continuing to grow its presence.

Tetra Pak coincided the launch of the Hohhot site with the publication of its Environmental and Social Report.
