Tipografic buys Heidelberg press to meet demand for cans

Label printer Tipografic has invested in a new Heidelberg press to cope with rising demand for canned food during the recession.

Birkenhead-based Tipografic said its wet label work for the canning industry was “thriving” in the current economic climate and the new machine had given it 30-40% higher productivity.

“Households are looking for cheaper ways of getting food on the table, so soups and beans and pastas are popular. It really is a good year for canning,” said managing director Jeff Cornell.

Tipografic installed the new Speedmaster XL 105-6+L in February to replace its CD 102 UV print and drying press with a conventional ink and infrared drying machine.

Last year, the firm prepared for the higher output the new machine offers by increasing its platesetting facilities and installing a new Polar cutting kit.

The Speedmaster runs 24 hours a day in a five- or six-day week and is capable of producing work of 75x105cm at 18,00sph.

“We are reacting to a change in the marketplace, making an investment that reflects the increasing cost and environmental consciousness among buyers,” said Cornell.

Tipografic prints wet labels on paper and plastic with a range of finishes including embossing and gold foiling. The firm also produces self-adhesive labels, cartons and security print.
