United Biscuits (UB) is expanding its use of pouches with the launch of 125g packs of McVitie’s Minis in an attempt to steal market share from the confectionery sector.

McVitie’s Mini Milk Chocolate Digestives, Mini Milk Chocolate Hob Nobs and Mini Milk Chocolate Chip Cookies will be available in the new larger format pouches.

United Biscuits’ marketing director of sweet biscuits Sarah Heynen said the sale of pouches are “outgrowing traditional confectionery formats”.

“The new format is designed for consumers that want to share some of their favourite biscuits in mini serving format,” she said.

“Sited next to confectionery, our research has shown that sales of the range can improve dramatically and deliver incremental sales alongside existing sweet impulse snacking products.”

UB follows in the footsteps of Burton’s Foods which has just launched mini versions of its Maryland Cookies, Jammie Dodgers and Cadbury’s Fingers in 125g pouches.

The company’s brands include Penguin, Jaffa Cakes, Twiglets, Hula Hoops and KP Nuts amongst others.

UB operates 15 manufacturing sites, 11 of which are located in the UK.
