UK packaging recycling rates hit new high

Businesses have been praised for their work in packaging recycling after government figures revealed UK recycling rates had risen 5% on 2007 levels.

According to the latest data from Defra and the Environment Agency, UK businesses contributed to the recovery of more than 7 million tonnes of packaging waste, of which 6.6 million tonnes were recycled.

“Businesses that handle packaging have a vital role to play in reducing the amount of waste we’re sending to landfill and I’m pleased to see they’re doing their bit,” said environment minister Jane Kennedy.

Environment Agency chief executive Paul Leinster said that last year was the “best year yet” for the amount of packaging waste recycled and that the body would continue to support businesses to meet their obligations.

“Everyone – the public, local authorities and businesses – should be proud of what has been achieved and spurred on to do even more,” he added.

A spokesman from the Local Government Association (LGA) said the rising recycling rates were “testament to the good work of council recycling services”.

He said; “Reducing packaging in the first place is an even better option than having to recycle it.”
