Finnish paper and forest products specialist UPM has achieved FSC and PEFC chain of custody certification across its global operations with the help of auditor SGS.

Previously, 34 out of UPM’s 63 operations had chain of custody certification from either PEFC or FSC.

Out of these mills, 18 had PEFC certification and 16 had FSC certification from a range of different auditors from around the world.

All of the company’s 63 operations will now be certified by the auditor SGS so it meets a global certification standard.

“With our key partner SGS we have achieved a global system which is very simple and manageable,” said UPM head of environmental services Sami Lundgren.

UPM’s newspaper mill in Shotton in Deeside has gained its first chain of custody certification under the global scheme.

UPM operates 63 production units worldwide: 53 in Europe, 4 in the US, 3 in China, 1 in Australia, Malaysia and South Africa.

PEFC and FSC are forest management schemes that ensure fibre comes from responsibly managed forests.
