UPM could expand into recycling board grades

Forest products specialist UPM is considering an move into the recovery of board grades as it expands its recovered paper procurement team.

Will Stone, UPM’s head of communications UK and Ireland, said the company is currently considering expanding its procurement portfolio, which “could include other grades beyond our current needs”.

UPM, the largest recycler of recovered paper in Europe, currently only recycles newsprint, periodicals and magazines.

China’s recent decision to stop importing board and other grades for recycling could be influencing factor in UPM’s decision to expand its procurement.

The company has made five new appointments to its recovered paper procurement team to support procurement operations within the UK.

UPM’s RCP UK team is based at UPM Shotton where approximately 650,000 tonnes of recovered paper is consumed to manufacture 100% recycled newsprint for the UK and international publishing sectors.
