Belgian packaging group VPK has acquired all the shares in Mondi Packaging Saint Quentin SAS, a French subsidiary of Mondi Group.

The corrugated box plant, which manufactures 100 million sqm a year of customised corrugated packaging for food and drink and FMCG firms and is located in the Picardie region of northern France, will be renamed Ondulys Saint Quentin.

Of the acquisition, VPK said it had taken the decision to search for an existing company or a new-build plant because its Lille, France facility could not be expanded due to its residential location.

“Saint Quentin is an excellent location, an excellent building and relatively new,” said senior legal council Luc Ledegen.

VPK declined to comment on the security of the 160 jobs at the Saint Quentin site.

Following the acquisition, the Lille plant will focus on producing high added-value packaging, while Oudegem Papier in Belgium will become the main paper supplier for the Saint Quentin plant.

In January, VPK Packaging Group closed its paper mill in Selby, North Yorkshire. The company employs 3,000 people across 26 operations in 12 European countries, and has a turnover of around €600m.
