Packaging materials supplier Walki is to raise prices by up to 10% in the New Year and standardise customer payment terms across its global markets, it announced today.

The Finnish group, which has a UK manufacturing base in Preston, blamed rising raw material and energy costs for the hike in prices, which it said would be up to 10% and would kick in on 1 February.

The rises will apply to both its protective packaging materials, which cover materials for flexible packaging, heavy duty packs, insulation and construction, and its technical papers range.

Jarkko Tuominen, vice president and general manager of Walki’s Technical Products business, told Packaging News that the exact level of price increases would depend on the specific materials and geographical markets.

He added that the price increases were also a response to fluctuations in currency markets that have hit many companies exporting from the eurozone.

Meanwhile, customers’ payment terms would be harmonised across geographical areas, although the company gave few details of how this would happen.

On the payment terms, Tuominen gave no specifics but said: “Again, it depends on the markets. But this is all so that we can handle payments better in the future.”

Customers will be contacted individually in the coming days over specific changes to their terms.
