Aerosol filling is returning to the UK from Eastern Europe and the Far East, according to new figures from the British Aerosol Manufacturer’s Association (BAMA).

BAMA has attributed the return of the filling companies to the UK to favourable exchange rates and the UK’s reputation for quality and service.

The comments follow the publication of aerosol filling figures for 2008, which revealed a relatively robust market, dipping by only 1.5% to 1240.7 million aerosol cans in 2008 compared to the previous year.

BAMA director Sue Rogers said that aerosol has become particularly popular in the suncare market, which has increased by 22.2% to 1.1 million aerosol cans in 2008.

“It’s always where the technology will make a difference to a product that people will choose an aerosol,” she said.

Rogers encouraged companies to invest in product development, adding that “now is the perfect time to be doing this as you get ahead”.

Michael Webster, associate director at Seymourpowell, who spoke at the launch of 2008′s filling figures yesterday, said innovation can be driven by the manufacturer and the brand.

Webster advised companies to consider the consumer, the world around you and most importantly where you want the company to be in the future, when innovating.

“The only way you can be where you want to be in 20 years time is to start there and work out the steps to get there,” he said. “For the aerosol industry, there’s a real opportunity for the industry as a whole to start looking far ahead.”
