Mondi likely to close Holcombe Mill

Mondi has entered into consultation with employees at its Holcombe, Lancashire recycled container board mill regarding the likely closure of the site.

Mondi has blamed rising energy costs, against a backdrop of declining demand as the economy slows, for the proposed closure of the mill.

The mill employs 90 people.

Holcombe Mill produces 105,000 tonnes of recycled containerboard per year on a 2.2m-wide paper machine and a second 2.65m-wide paper machine for the UK domestic market.

The fixed assets of the mill have been placed at the book value of £1.19m (€1.5m), while the total closure and other costs are estimated to come to around £4m (€5m) pre tax.

Mondi has production facilities across 35 countries and had an average of 35,000 employees in 2007.
