Aspira improves on inhaler dispensing

Bang & Olufsen Medicom has produced a breath-actuated inhaler which can dispense drugs for treating diseases such as diabetes.

Aspira has been specially designed so that it reduces the particle flow rate, thus ensuring improved drug delivery to the lungs. It can be used with liquid drug formulations suitable for pMDIs (pressurised metered dose inhalers).

Breath-actuated inhalers are activated automatically when the user inhales. This automatic release makes it easier for patients such as children or the elderly, who have trouble co-ordinating conventional press-and-breathe inhalers.

The inhaler also has an integrated dose-counter, already used in B&O Mediacom’s asthma inhaler range. It can record up to 200 individual doses and is a useful feature for users who have difficulty tracking their medication.

“Aspira is a cost-effective solution for the treatment of diabetes, due to a reservoir technology which reduces the daily cost of administering the treatment,” said Christian Husegaard, head of sales and marketing at B&O Medicom.

Insulin inhalers are a recent advancement for diabetic sufferers who have a needle phobia or who do not like taking the injectable form of insulin.
