BrewDog beer designed by students in Apprentice-style contestSimeon Goldstein, 21 December 2009Be the first to comment on this article University students from Wrexham have created the packaging and branding for a special edition beer that will be brewed by Scottish firm BrewDog next year. Five design and media students at Glyndwr University in Wrexham took part in a competition organised by The Zone – the university’s centre for extra curricular enterprise and entrepreneurship activities – to design a concept for a new beer to promote the university. In a format similar to that of BBC TV show The Apprentice, the teams were given a day to come up with the flavour, packaging and branding of the beer. They then sent video pitches to BrewDog founder James Watt, who subsequently selected the 1412 beer as the winning entry. Watt said: “All the students worked hard and produced some great results, but 1412 was the most commercial, innovative and well-presented idea.” The winning team was made up of Mark Scott, Michelle Roberts, Qinyun Hu, Yz Wez and Phillip Chan, who will travel to Scotland to visit the BrewDog brewery. “Winning the competition was great, but I never thought we’d actually see the beer being brewed,” said Chan. The beer will be made for the university’s ball in May and available at its Guild bar for a limited time. The bottle design uses the university’s colours. The name 1412 refers to the last recorded sighting of Welsh hero Owain Glyndwr who led an unsuccessful revolt against English rule in Wales and was the last Welsh native to hold the title of Prince of Wales. He is seen as a father of Welsh nationalism. BrewDog has twice hit the headlines in the past 12 months due to Portman Group decisions to blacklist beers in its range.
