Mintel: portions and greying society are growing design issues

Portion control and the UKs ageing population will become increasingly important issues in food-packaging design, market research firm Mintel told delegates at the Pro2Pac show today.

Mintel director David Jago told a seminar at the inaugural exhibition that health issues were “driving portioning decisions”, especially in the US.

“Food waste is becoming an increasingly important issue, which may lead to more widespread use of portioning,” said Jago.

“Designing products with the elderly in mind will also be important given the country’s ageing population.

“It’s important to always bear the end user in mind, and focus on making simple steps rather than making major changes that the consumer finds difficult to understand, especially when it comes to environmental products.”

Pro2Pac takes place until Wednesday (21 March) at the ExCel exhibition centre in London’s Docklands.
