Global Closure Systems (GCS) is one of the first companies to opt for a new lightweight closure intended to become an industry standard for plastic drinks bottles.

GCS division Obrist, which specialises in plastic closures and metal crowns for beverage packs, will introduce a single or a two-piece option of the PCO 1881 product before launching an entire range.

The PCO 1881 standard was agreed at a meeting of the International Society for Beverage Technologists in November 2006.

The organisation has spearheaded the campaign to lightweight the existing industry standard, the PCO 1810 closure.

Mauro Signorini, Paris-based GCS's vice president of sales and marketing for beverage plastics, said the new 28mm closure weighed 1.3g less than the PCO 1810.

"We knew this project required advanced technology to ensure the corresponding closure worked properly," he said.
