Morrisons has become the latest supermarket to announce a major push into shelf-ready packaging.

Chief executive Marc Bolland (pictured) disclosed the plans as the company revealed pre-tax profits of £369m for the 53 weeks to February 2007.

Packaging is one factor under consideration by the company, which will also revamp its image. Bolland said shelf-ready packaging would cut the time spent by staff unpacking goods.

He also addressed customers’ environmental concerns: “We will be reducing our packaging wherever we can, and looking for more sustainable and recyclable sources.”

By 2010, the company hopes to have reduced own-brand packaging by 15%.
