Wiseman feels pressure of escalating packaging costs

A sustained rise in packaging costs could hit profits at Scottish dairy firm Robert Wiseman.

The company, which counts Tesco among its customers, announced today (4 July) that sales for the first three months of the financial year had risen by almost 6% compared with the same period last year.

But chairman Alan Wiseman said the continued rise in the price of HDPE, which is used in the manufacturing of milk bottles, was of particular concern.

"This will impact our outlook unless these costs subside or we seek recovery through pricing in the period ahead," he said.

The company said it should be able to absorb the costs for the six months from April, but if costs remained high, this might be "more difficult" in the second half of the year.

Robert Wiseman's milk packaging is produced in strategic partnership with Alpla and Nampak at locations near its dairies.
