Co-op lands 'best in class' for bottle

The Co-op has set a ‘best in class’ weight standard for 70cl spirits bottles with the launch of a new bottle for its own-label whisky.

The 298g bottle, which was developed and produced by Rockware, will be the first commercially available 70cl spirits bottle to weigh less than 300g.

The format will be rolled out to the Co-op’s own-label gin and vodka brands and around 400,000 70cl bottles will switch to the lighter weight. The Co-op is also looking for similar reductions in its one-litre spirits bottles.

The new product has been included in the Container Lite scheme, funded by the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP). WRAP estimates a 15% reduction in weight of the 66m spirits bottles sold each year would annually save 4,000 tonnes of glass.
