Proskills to boost print training with launch of National Training Academy

Proskills will set up a National Training Academy to enhance the content and delivery of training in the print sector.

Announced by Education and Skills Secretary Alan Johnson, the academy will give employers more influence over how their staff should be trained.

According to Proskills CEO Terry Watts, the Academy will support the development of "training pods", local hubs run by employers to share training resources and formally recognise previous in-house, employer-led training.

Proskills printing industry champion Richard Bloxam told printweek.com the Academy is hoping to see its first candidate start next year.

"At a time when the industry is under immense pressure, companies have two choices: either plan their exit strategy and minimise the financial damage, or up their game and compete with the best," Bloxam said.

"If companies invest a fraction of the amount on staff development that they invest on equipment, they will reap the financial benefits," he said.

"The key is to start with effective management that is able to set company strategy, identify the critical skills required and provide those skills that are missing," he added.

Employers and employees interested in furthering their training opportunities can phone the Proskills Hotline on 01235 432 032.

Proskills is the skills council for the print sector.

Thank god.

Just lets hope they have people with ENTHUSIASM for print there, not the usual dull dry duffers who purport to be "print experts".

Your best teachers when you were sprogs were the ones that had passion for their subject & print industry training needs this to bring it to life.

Sadly in print those who have it generally are too busy/ in demand to lecture on their subjects, but if we are serious of attracting the best people into the industry then we must invest our passion in this. I for one will be happy to put some time in for free to get this moving & I know there will be others!
