Packaging designers must do more to exploit senses

The packaging industry could do more to take advantage of the human senses other than sight, according to a materials expert.

Dr Malcolm Butler, managing director of FaraPack Polymers, said research had proven that crunchy noises heightened the perception of crispiness to a person eating.

Smart materials were even being applied to packaging to give “perfect” flavours after microwave cooking, highlighting the range of possibilities for the future of materials, he told a seminar in the Packaging Innovation theatre

And while research showed people preferred peelable beer labels, he said this was not the limit of consumer interaction.
