Rexams Sleek can targets new sector

Leading can manufacturer Rexam is targeting mineral water, fruit juice and health drink manufacturers with the worlds first 330ml aluminium sleek can, which it is rolling out across Europe.

While there are already ‘slimline’ 330ml cans on the market, the Rexam Alu Sleek is the first to be manufactured from 100 per cent recyclable aluminium. Ball Europe supplies Coca-Cola in France with its steel version of the can.

Rexam is in talks with a number of major drinks manufacturers about buying into the Sleek concept. The company will manufacture the cans in Europe at its factory in Recklinghausen, Germany.

The Rexam Alu Sleek will have the same capacity as a standard 330ml soft drink can, but is taller and more slender, lending it a modern look and feel. Rexam believes the design’s sleek lines improve on-shelf impact and make it easier for consumers to handle.  

Different-sized versions of the Sleek can have been available in the US since 2005. They are used by drinks brands including Coca-Cola, Pepsi-Cola and Starbucks Coffee.

Like all drinks cans, the Alu Sleek can protects its contents from light and oxygen and has the advantage of chilling faster than bottles, says the firm.

“Alu Sleek has been developed for the European market, primarily with mineral water and health drinks in mind,” said Göte Nylin, Rexam’s marketing development director. “However, the exciting new size and shape lends itself to any beverage type.”
