ACP confident of meeting recycling targets despite materials crisis

The weakening materials market will hit companies who have not already made steps to comply with recycling targets, but the UK is on track to meet 2008 requirements.

John Turner, the chair of the Advisory Committee on Packaging (ACP) told Packaging News this year’s targets were “just about achievable”, although admitted there would be “difficulties in a number of areas”.

Turner recognised that the reduced export market for recyclate had led to a rise in packaging recovery note (PRN) prices, but said that it was the natural result of operating in a free market.

“If you’ve left it to the last minute, and not made arrangements to comply with 2008 targets, then you could find it difficult,” he added.

Nonetheless, he urged people to “get on and redouble their efforts to comply with the requirements”.

The ACP is due to meet next month and again in January, after which it will be able to take a view on how UK business recovery targets for 2009 might need to be adjusted.
