Asda introduces incentives to go green

Asda shoppers who do not take new plastic carrier bags are to be rewarded with vouchers that can be exchanged for green goodies for schools, such as aluminium can crushers and model wind turbines.

The supermarket hopes to further encourage customers to use fewer bags by giving away 1m ‘bags for life’ over the next 10 weeks. It will offer each customer one ‘bag for life’ for every five plastic bags they return. It will also open ‘bag-free’ checkouts.

If the trial is successful, Asda will consider making this a permanent feature in its stores.

Meanwhile, on Friday (27 April), Sainsbury’s will give out an estimated 7m ‘bags for life’ – which normally cost 10p – as part of a one-day ban on plastic carrier bags.
