AWS Eco Plastics has boosted production of its rPET pellets (purePET 78) in response to growing demand for post-consumer recycled PET from customer Artenius PET Packaging Europe (APPE).

AWS won a contract from APPE in 2008 to provide the packaging firm with 13,000 tonnes of rPET per year and despite a fire at its Hemswell plant in August last year, it has managed to maintain its production levels.

Since then, AWS has received additional demand from APPE and added that it was also experiencing an upsurge in demand for its purePET 78 plastic from other customers.

AWS said its ability to sustain itself during the upheaval following the fire was “only possible through the significant support from all suppliers, customers and employees”.

Tony Hayes, AWS’s Hemswell site manager, added: “I am delighted to see this uplift in tonnage and sales. This complements the recent increase in output from the plant, largely due to the efforts of my production and engineering teams.

“We are now fully operational 24-7 and if we could run 30 hours a day,the output would [still] be sold.”

Earlier this month is was revealed that APPE is looking to boost UK use of post-consumer recycled PET by investing more than £250,000 in a new mixing facility.
