Beatson Clark will increase the use of recycled cullet in its bottles after winning a three-year tender to separate recycled waste in Rotherham.

The container glass manufacturer has been running a temporary service to sort Rotherham’s Blue Box recycling collection since December, after the city’s contract with its existing operator was terminated.

The three-year contract with the council, which will collect the material and transport it to the facility, is subject to planning permission and an environmental permit for the site. The contract starts in July and there is a possibility of a two-year extension.

Some 111,000 Rotherham households generate around 7,500 tonnes of recyclate a year, of which 6,200 is glass. Beatson Clark will sell on the material it is unable to use.

The glass will be colour-segregated and used to make new amber and flint bottles. Beatson Clark does not produce green glass bottles, although some of the green cullet collected can be recycled into the amber furnace.

Marketing manager Charlotte Taylor told Packaging News having onsite sorting would be a big boost to the operation. “It should maintain a good quality level of cullet.”

The Rotherham firm produces a wide range of amber and flint bottles for the food and drink and pharmaceutical sectors.
