Better waste collection needed

The announcement from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to confirm the packaging recycling targets for the coming years should be welcomed by those across the packaging chain.

In the past few years we have witnessed a great deal of innovation to improve environmental performance of packaging in the UK, including the introduction of the world’s first recycled content HDPE milk bottle, but there is more that could be done.

The millions of pounds being invested in plastic packaging reprocessing in the UK is also a positive environmental sign and indicative of a growing domestic market for packaging waste.

Future success is, however, contingent on an increase in collection from the post-consumer waste stream.

With only just over half of UK households having kerbside collections for plastics, there is the obvious potential to make subsequent recycling targets more challenging and offer even greater environmental benefits.
