The British Plastics Federation is urging firms to sign up to climate change levy reduction without delay.

The BPF is finalising its climate change agreement (CCA) with the government and estimates it could save the industry £50m a year until 2017.

The absolute deadline for the current scheme is 31 October, but firms that sign up now could start to receive the discount from 1 October. Firms failing to sign up will have to wait until April 2011 for the next scheme.

Director general Peter Davis said the money saved by the discount would go into making the industry more efficient and competitive. “If companies are to benefit from this unique opportunity they must act now and begin the registration process.

“Almost 100 firms have had the foresight to apply for the scheme and will benefit from the discount at the earliest possible opportunity,” he said.

Companies with a qualifying site can get an 80% discount on the levy on electricity and gas, and BPF member get a 50% discount on fees.
