CEPI creates system to track recovered paper across supply chain

The Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) has launched a system to improve the traceability of recovered paper in the supply chain.

Firms that sign up to the European Recovered Paper Identification System – beginning on 1 January 2008 – will have to label their output according to the supplier, so that the movement of recovered paper can be easily tracked.

The scheme will help address concerns about product quality and also verify companies' claims about how much of their material is actually recycled.

"It will allow us to trace whole shipments up and down the supply chain," said CEPI recycling director Jori Ringman.

There has already been interest from some of the larger firms in the sector, which Ringman said would hopefully help promote the system with other companies.

"Companies will need to be a bit flexible at the start in order to integrate the scheme into their procurement system," he added.

He did not rule out that, in the longer term, the system might develop to enable the use of RFID technology or the internet to improve the process, but said the most important initial step was to harmonise information systems across the continent.

CEPI is to set more precise implementation targets by next March.

It has also published its third sustainability report for the industry, which is available from the CEPI website.
