Chapman’s outdoes competition with lightweight bottle

Bottle merchant Chapman’s has added a new-style lightweighted half-litre bottle to its range, which it is aiming at the burgeoning independent and micro breweries sector.

The new design mimics the shape and proportions of a bottle manufactured by one of Chapman’s competitors – a 400g bottle, which was recently withdrawn from use by its maker.

Chapman’s worked closely with bottle manufacturer O-I to devise a replacement, which weighs just 330g. The bottle is currently only available through Chapman’s.

James Reekes, sales manager at Chapman’s, said: “What we have done with O-I is to ensure that the dimensions of our competitor’s 400g bottle, which was a great favourite with brewers, have been retained at the lowest practical weight.”

Chapman’s brewery clients, including Rhymney Brewery, Inveralmond, Little Valley Brewery and Glastonbury Ales, will have their beers bottled in the new format.

Paul McLavin, O-I’s sales manager, said: “Lightweight manufacturing is moving steadily forward. We have an enormous number of independent brewers in the UK.

“Moves such as this venture between ourselves and Chapman’s allow them to compete financially with the regional players.”
