A chicken-processing firm near Preston has been fined 17,705 for failing to comply with packaging waste legislation.

Blackpool Magistrates Court fined Direct Poultry Supply (InSkip) £9,000 and ordered it to pay £6,706 in compensation, £1,984 in costs and a £15 victim charge.

An Environment Agency spokeswoman told Packaging News that the firm had been prosecuted for six offences under the packaging waste regulations but did not provide any further detail as the organisation is still subject to purdah.

Direct Poultry Supply declined to comment when contacted by Packaging News this morning.

The Environment Agency (EA) has been criticised in the past for failing to sufficiently promote the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations.

Firms that handle more than 50 tonnes of packaging waste and have a turnover of more than £2m a year must register with the EA or a compliance scheme.
